I’ve been drafting this post in my head all day; not quite able to get the words down right. So instead, I am setting a five-minute time limit and just word vomiting with no backspaces. Bear with me – it’s been one of those days.
This project has had an incredible impact my life so far. I feel motivated to be kinder not only through these acts I showcase on here, but in my every-day interactions with everyone I come across. I’ve also realized that these acts don’t take a lot of time to incorporate into my life. A few minutes a day I devote to turning someone else’s day around? It’s a no brainer.
That being said, I haven’t been taking care of myself these last few weeks. Between losing one of my best friends, ending a quasi-relationship unexpectedly, drinking my weight in beer and generally adopting a “#yolo” frame of mind to keep myself from giving it all any serious thought, I’m running on empty.
Some of you have emailed me and commented asking why my acts of kindness never start with myself. I’m not sure why not? I never really pictured this project evolving into that…and it feels like a bit of a cop-out…but why not? It’s my project. And doesn’t all kindness really start with yourself? Fact: The happier you are, the less likely you are to be an asshole.
As such, these next seven days will be devoted to acts of kindness you can implement in your own life. It’s a week of self-love. After the week is up, back to acts of kindness for others. I promise!
Total Kindness Cost: $40
Any suggestion for “selfish” acts of kindness this week? What are your favourite ways to unwind?
