#32 Go enjoy some live music.

I’ve been drafting this post in my head all day; not quite able to get the words down right. So instead, I am setting a five-minute time limit and just word vomiting with no backspaces. Bear with me – it’s been one of those days.

This project has had an incredible impact my life so far. I feel motivated to be kinder not only through these acts I showcase on here, but in my every-day interactions with everyone I come across. I’ve also realized that these acts don’t take a lot of time to incorporate into my life. A few minutes a day I devote to turning someone else’s day around? It’s a no brainer.

That being said, I haven’t been taking care of myself these last few weeks. Between losing one of my best friends, ending a quasi-relationship unexpectedly, drinking my weight in beer and generally adopting a “#yolo” frame of mind to keep myself from giving it all any serious thought, I’m running on empty.

Some of you have emailed me and commented asking why my acts of kindness never start with myself. I’m not sure why not? I never really pictured this project evolving into that…and it feels like a bit of a cop-out…but why not? It’s my project. And doesn’t all kindness really start with yourself? Fact: The happier you are, the less likely you are to be an asshole.

As such, these next seven days will be devoted to acts of kindness you can implement in your own life. It’s a week of self-love. After the week is up, back to acts of kindness for others. I promise!

My first “selfish” act of kindness is unplugging tonight and seeing one of my favourite sad-girl voices perform at Echo Beach. Shutting off my phone and enjoying a night under the stars.

Total Kindness Cost: $40

Any suggestion for “selfish” acts of kindness this week? What are your favourite ways to unwind?

    • Thank you! It indeed as a peaceful and restorative night. Perfect way to kick off my week of self-directed acts of kindness.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. 🙂

  2. It is NOT selfish to love yourself! People NEED to get over it!
If you cannot LOVE YOU, ain’t no one else gonna!
Thank you and have creative fun with YOU. Only because, you deserve it.
Now go show us how to love oneself!
    Great post,
    ren

    • Hey Ren,

Was hoping you would pipe in. I woke up this morning being like “Ahhh” what am I doing? I’m ruining my blog and my mission!

But you’re right. I’m going to give it a go.

      Thank you.

  3. Great point! I read somewhere that ‘selfish’ is not doing what you want but making others do what you want. (Or something like that.) I get that you’re using the term ‘selfish’ kind tongue-in-cheek but if you start feeling that you are being selfish by taking time to be kind to you, just remember this. (By the way, I hope you got the ping-back from my post on Inspiration. https://teressinascrive.wordpress.com/2016/07/27/find-inspiration-choose-happy/ Because you are inspirational!)

    • Thanks, Teressina. Appreciate you stopping by and leaving the mention in your blog! 🙂

  4. Good for you! This is such a healthy thing to do! When I need to do something for myself, I take a long hot bath. I eat foods that comfort me and pamper myself: hair, skin, and nails. I do everything I can to show my body that I love it.

    • I love long hot baths! I need one of those trays that I can put a book and glass of wine on though! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.

  5. Great idea! I’ve been trying to get behind an intention to turn my bedroom into an oasis. A haven. When my last visitor came, I emptied front closet for them and nothing got put back – still in the bedroom. Winter darkness is coming a new cozy spot would feel nice.

  6. Massage! It’s part of my new monthly regimen called “Taking Care of Myself.”

    • Wonderful idea. I just booked one and will post about it later this week! 🙂

Thanks for the suggestion. Can’t wait.
